A Brief History Of Cocoa

Cocoa originated approximately 4,000 years ago in Mesoamerica or what is now known as Mexico, the tribe that is said to be the first to make chocolate from the cocoa bean was the Olmec tribe.

The olmec are said to have used chocolate during rituals and as medicine. Centuries after the Olmec, the Mayans were another tribe to use chocolate and even considered it the drink of the gods.

The arrival of chocolate to Europe was thought to have been from Hernan Cortes bringing back cocoa seeds to spain from his expeditions to the Americas. After cocoa reached Europe it was sweetened and

enjoyed by the wealthier individuals of the time until it became commonplace for the average human being to enjoy.
